Status Conference 2009

Status conference 18 and 19 March 2009 at Bonn

KLIWAS - Impacts of Climate Change on Waterways and Navigation in Germany -
1st Status Conference, organised by the Federal Ministry of Transport, Building and Urban Development (BMVBS)

Climate change will have consequences in many fields. Regarding inland and maritime navigation the functions of the waterways may be impacted and thus also the reliability of this environmentally friendly transport system. For instance, changes in the occurrence of hydro-meteorological extremes may trigger a chain of effects that will require adaptations in the planning of waterway management.
Against this background in the year 2007 the Federal Ministry of Transport, Building and Urban Development (BMVBS) launched the research programme "KLIWAS - Impacts of Climate Change on Waterways and Navigation in Germany - Options to adapt". The work done so far focussed under the pilot project "Hydrology and Inland Navigation" on regional climate variations and their consequences for the interactive system "inland waterways" using the River Rhine as an example. In early 2009 the research programme was significantly expanded. During the colloquium, the themes of now 30 projects under 5 research tasks were introduced and first outputs of the pilot project were presented and discussed.
Here below you find the programme of the meeting and the presentations for download (in German language).
