Objectives

The changes determined with the help of climate model studies in marine and atmospheric conditions in northwest Europe will be studied with regard to their effect on maritime navigation, the use of the sea and the marine environment.
This project aims to identify possible climate-induced economic damage potentials, so that adaptation measures can be introduced at an early stage and also to sound out opportunities for new enterprises. In addition, base data will be created for adaptation of navigation services, forecasts and ecosystem modelling under changed environmental conditions. The studies cover the North Sea, the Baltic Sea and the adjoining North Atlantic, since the latter strongly influences atmospheric and oceanographic conditions in the North Sea. Particular attention will be given to extreme sea state events, as these can cause considerable damage to navigation and offshore structures, but have not until now been included in operational forecasting.
