Objectives

This project will develop analytical multi-methods for the reliable quantifying of selected insecticides, herbicides, algal toxins and biocides in marine surface waters and marine sediments using LC-MS/MS analysis. It will also examine the extent to which these substances degrade at different temperatures in the marine system or are absorbed/adsorbed by marine sediments.
Next, the influence of climate change on pollutant content and on the pollutant load in dredged material from maintenance dredging works will be examined. This will be compared with changes brought about by construction measures and maintenance strategies. The estuaries of the Elbe, Weser and Ems will be studied along with sections of the Baltic coastline.
Using the results of this project, the BMVBS and its higher authorities will be able to react early to possible changes, introduce adaptation measures and reach agreements with the affected parties. Economic and ecological damage can be alleviated or prevented. Farsighted political measures can thus be placed on a solid, scientific foundation.
