Objectives

The objective of this project is to assess climate-induced impact on the vegetation along federal waterways. Firstly, a database will be created using data from various temporal and spatial resolutions from typical areas of study which contains information on vegetation and local factors (hydrology, soil). Besides the general relationships of plant species and vegetation units to their environment, the impact of extreme hydrological situations (long duration of low or high water) on the species composition of flood plains will be examined. On the basis of the results, models will be developed for the spatially explicit assessment of changes in the habitat of plant species and plant communities caused by climate change or by measures in an explicitly defined area. This project will create tools to support the Federal Waterways and Shipping Authority (WSV) in planning for climate change.

The regions under study are the Rhine and Elbe rivers.
